There are multiple things I will “need to know” in order to address my driving question. One of which is different methods and theories that will help me bring physical education into the era of 21st century learning. How can I use technology to help my students access the information quickly and to also help them reach their fitness goals.
I would also like to gather some research that supports my secondary driving question “Is physical education and health science essential to our education system?” I need to know how PE and Health support the educational system. How they might help the brain. How might help our students take better care of themselves. Help them see the value of learning and growing as a person. Help them learn how to deal with their emotions. How might PE empower our students to become better learners. I will meausure my “need to knows” through my action research as a teacher as I improve my teaching and case studies. I can do this through cognitive tests and student achievements.

One of your questions that caught my attention was “is physical education and health science essential to our education system?” because that is a similar question that I have pondered with the current integrated Math curriculum at NVUSD. How much is this curriculum preparing our students for college, jobs, and the adult world? I ask myself sometimes is the way I teach preparing my students for all of this. I think we as educators really try to teach students these skills and not just prepare them for the next level course that comes next year. The infamous question that arises in a math class, “when will I ever use this in real life?” Well something that we can look in to in our own content classes is exactly what you said, we need to “help them see the value of learning and growing as a person” with the activities we do in our classroom or as in your case the gym or outdoors. :)

I think your main driving question is an important one to ask because I do feel that PE and health tend to be put on the back burner for funds. Are we doing a disservice to our students by not considering that this subject is as equally important to bring up to date 21st century strategies to the curriculum? The obvious answer is YES! So I am really interested in where your research takes you.

I like what Kristina said. People today, especially students, stereo-typically think of P.E like those classes that they would see in Saved By The Bell episodes. Today's PE classes are so much more than running laps and climbing ropes, but an integration of physical exercise and knowledge of the human body in action. With the use of technology it can help you bridge that gap and break that stereo-type of PE classes on T.V.

I think this is such an important topic to address. I agree that our district/society does not support it enough. I see a much higher level of health issues and that interfere with students ability to be successful in the classroom. New Tech, specifically has an incredibly high number of students with anxiety. I think empowering students to be healthy physically connects to their emotional state and can be life changing both in and out of the classroom. I am excited to see where your questions take you.
