Transliteracy is the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools, and medias. The concept of transliteracy has had a significant influence in thinking and creation of my Capstone project. My entire Capstone project was based on the idea of bringing physical education and health science into the 21st century, in other words implementing different technologies, tools, and medias throughout the class. Being able to use the concept of transliteracy throughout the classroom will make physical and health education more relevant to today's teens and has allowed me to grow and innovative educator.

There has been a couple challenges in creating my final cut of my video. The biggest one is finding a balance between putting enough information into my video and putting too little. I want to ensure that that there is enough of a hook in my video, so that my audience will want to explore my website and be interested in learning about my capstone.
I have to admit that the journey in creating my website for my capstone has been fun. Not only have I learned so much about bringing technology into a physical education classroom, but I have also actually enjoyed creating the website. I am excited to see the finished products. Personally I feel as though creating my video hasn't been that difficult, especially because I was able to watch everyone else's before creating my own. This gave me the unique opportunity to pick out what I wanted to do and how I wanted my video to flow.
The most difficult part of trying to create my video has been finding a QUIET time and place to record my voice-over. At work there are always students around and if there are no students there has been non-stop construction outside. Then at home I of course live on a busy street and there always seems to be back ground noise when I record. Maybe I am being too critical, but thus far that has been my biggest challenge. My greatest struggle with my Capstone video is my script. I want to make sure that I should up-beat at the appropriate moments, but most importantly I want draw people in with video, which I think might be making me over think the script. On another note my other struggle has been time. Between coaching, teaching, final this week, and hosting a water polo tournament (not to mention family stuff) I have felt like I can't keep up. I am hoping that I can get a head again next week, so that I can finish the program strong.
On a more positive note I really am enjoying utilizing the features of Adobe Spark. I love the music options and the pictures and new designs. I also really enjoyed watching everyone else's videos. It made me more confident in creating my video by watching what worked in my classmates videos. My journey through out this Capstone project has gone multiple different directions., yet has come full circle. I started wanting to learn how to better incorporate technology into a physical education and health science classroom. I changed my driving question in order to research how student's nutrition affected their learning and if there was a correlation between nutrition and the referral rate. I then wanted to utilize technology resources to promote and increase self-esteem and self-awareness. But as I really thought about who my audience was for my capstone I realized everything I was doing was trying to utilize and implement technology and 21st century learning into my classes. So I realized that I have come full circle; I want my capstone to help other teachers and administrators bring PE and Health classes into the 21st century.
I decided to use Adobe Spark as my editor. I have used multiple other such as screensastify, google slides, powtoon, but Adobe Spark has been my favorite presentation tool. I like that your presentation can be broken up as you record unlike screencastify, because if you mess up you have to start your presentation at the beginning. It also gives you music options that will play in the back ground that can set the mood of your presentation. And lastly I really like that you can either use your own photos for the slides or you can choose from the countless free photos they have available. I used a supposedly free logo site called Logojoy. It was a great site, but misleading. It had me first pick a name which for me was difficult at first. I eventually came up with "21st Century PE". I chose this because my original goal for this master program was to bring physical education into the 21st century and learn how to best implement technology throughout both my physical education class and my health class.
After I finally chose what my logo name would be the site had me look through other logos and pick five designs that I liked. Following that It gave me a selection of colors; each color included descriptors of what they meant. For example I chose green which means harmony, peace, and is calming - amongst other descriptors. Following choosing one color you are given tons of images to sift through that can add to your logo. You can choose up to five images then it creates multiple logos in different shades of green and typing of the name. My favorite was a sea foam green color with an image of a whistle. I really like this site and it was very easy to use, but like I said it is misleading. It says in the title "Free Logo Maker", but in the end when you try to save your logo it wants you to pay a fee for a subscription. So it's not truly free. I really like this logo and want use it, but i will be attempting to re-create it on a site that is actually free. Transliteracy is the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools, and medias. Reflecting upon the last class and what we have learned over the course of this program I am once again reminded that our audience is always the student. They have endless knowledge and information waiting for them at their finger tips. It reminds me of the "Global Classroom" idea. The idea that tour students sit in small classroom in small town Napa yet, they are more connected to a global classroom just by using the internet on their cell phone and as their instructors we must provide opportunities for them to read, write, and interact with it all. I really appreciate the concept of transliteracy and it is currently changing the way I deliver my content in the classroom and the way I use different technology platforms in my classroom.
In a way transliteracy not only ties in with my current driving question but also my original thoughts of where I wanted this Capstone to take me. Originally my goal was to simply bring physical education into the 21st century and implement more technology into the classroom in hopes of making PE and Health education more relevant to today's teens. Now my goal is to promote positive self-image and self-esteem by utilizing different technology platforms to positively self-reflect. |
